Barclays to Sell Retail Banking Business in Italy

LONDON — Barclays said on Thursday that it had agreed to sell its retail banking business in Italy to CheBanca, a unit of Mediobanca Group of Italy.

It is the latest retail banking exit by Barclays in Continental Europe as the British bank seeks to reshape itself by selling underperforming businesses and focusing on what it considers its core operations.

The restructuring began under Antony Jenkins, the lender’s former chief executive who was ousted in July, and is continuing under its new top executive, James E. Staley, who officially joined Barclays on Tuesday…
