Bill Bartmann Debates Former FDIC Chairman on CNBC

By Tony Seruga

Last night Bill Bartmann had the opportunity to appear on CNBC’s Kudlow & Company to debate with William Isaacs, the former Chairman of the FDIC regarding the number of future bank failures.

As Bill drove home from the TV studio, he could not help but think about what a great country this is we live in and what wonderful opportunities abound for all of us.  Bill also could not help but smile when he realized how ironic it was that he had just debated the former Chairman of the FDIC on national television.

Let me explain.

24 years ago Bill was bankrupt, dead broke and a million dollars in the hole while the entire country was in a major economic recession.  It was then that Bill went to the FDIC (at the time William Isaacs was the Chairman) and bought his first box of “non-performing loans.”   And, as you know, the rest is now history; that first transaction of a single box of loans turned into a billion dollar enterprise.

Isn’t this a great country?   A person can go from dead broke to billionaire and 24 years later end up on national television debating the very person who ran the entire organization that made that fortune possible.

All of us can take reassurance from knowing that even in the worst of economic times and in the worst of personal situations – opportunities show up in the most unlikely places.
