In the still early years of the private exchange approach to health benefits, one of the industry’s pioneers says the online portal way of managing employee medical costs is keeping employers happy with lower rate increases than the past.

While medical care spending by companies is still rising somewhat, Aon Hewitt (AON), one of the health industry’s pioneers in the development of private exchanges, said employers that completed a second-year renewal had average annual cost increases of 2.6% “over the two years they were on the exchange.” By comparison, the average cost increase during that same time for large U.S. employers with similar benefit structures is projected to be 6.5% to 8% this year…
